Is Red Wine Beneficial for Diabetics?

Perhaps whether people with diabetes should drink red or white wine is one of the most controversial discussions in diabetes health and lifestyle. Scientists argue it’s not the type of wine but rather it’s the concentration of alcohol that makes a difference. Studies show Type II diabetes is less prevalent among moderate drinkers. Though this is good news, scientists are yet to reach a unanimous decision about the risk-benefit of drinking. In a new study researches found a glass of red wine a day can improve cardiac health and cholesterol management among individuals with Type II diabetes.

This is great news for diabetics who are passionate about red wine. If you are among those who enjoy drinking red wine, keep up the burning passion because scientists are now proving positive outcomes with moderate drinking of red wine.

Researchers at Ben-Gurion University, Israel, set out to find out if moderate drinking of wine can have cardiometabolic effects. They were interested in determining what type of wine would have a greater effect. Interested in determining the factors that determine alcohol breakdown and genetic profiling, they tested 224 participants (both men and women) between ages 40-75, who had not consumed wine before. Some participants were administered mineral water while others were given red or white wine with dinner. All participants were on a Mediterranean diet.

Two years of study comparing the effects of red versus white wine culminated that moderate drinking of red wine can not only improve health of heart but can also lower cholesterol. Results revealed that red wine had a much more significant protective effect on the heart and lipid profiles. The researchers also noted that while alcohol itself improved glucose control, the red wine independently also had a marked effect on cholesterol, suggesting that the non-alcoholic components of red wine were beneficial.

While the results of this study are impressive, a word of caution is necessary. Drinking too much red wine can have negative health effects such as liver damage. Moderate drinking is the key. Limit your consumption to one or half a glass of red wine a day.
