BAYER CONTOUR VS. CONTOUR NEXT GLUCOSE TEST STRIPS

Bayer-Contour-NEXT-glucose-test-strips

Bayer Contour and Contour NEXT blood glucose test strips are manufactured by Bayer. Contour test strips are widely used in United States and around the world for their great features. Bayer Contour glucose monitoring systems are highly popular here in the U.S because they are affordable, easy-to-use, and clinically accurate. Moreover, in a study conducted by J.D Power in 2014 Bayer was ranked highest by consumers for blood glucose meter satisfaction.

Bayer Contour and Contour NEXT glucose monitoring systems share similar features such as the No Coding Technology. Despite the common similarities, there are some differences. You can safely assume that Contour NEXT is the next generation of Contour glucose monitoring system. In fact, Bayer is now encouraging users to upgrade to Contour NEXT for highly accurate results. One major difference between the 2 systems is the test strips.

Bayer Contour glucose meters use Contour test strips whereas Contour NEXT glucose meters use Contour NEXT test strips. Much like the meters, these test strips share some similarities and dissimilarities. For the most part, they are fairly identical.

It is very common for Bayer users to ask “what’s the difference between Bayer Contour and Bayer Contour NEXT glucose test strips?” In fact, our customers often ask us the same question. Which one should I use? Are Contour NEXT test strips better than Contour test strips?

What’s the Difference Between Contour and Contour NEXT test strips?

Bayer Contour test strips are proven to delivery clinically accurate results. However, the Contour NEXT test strips when used NEXT EZ meters take the accuracy to the next level by offering next-generation accuracy. The new innovative technology built in Contour NEXT assesses a single blood sample using 7 pulses for significantly precise test results. It’s important to emphasize that Bayer’s new Contour NEXT EZ Meter works only with Bayer’s new Contour NEXT blood glucose test strips.

At a glance, new users may not realize the differences between Contour and Contour NEXT test strips – apart from the name and colors. Similar to meters, Contour and Contour NEXT test strips share some similarities. However there are a few features that distinguish Contour NEXT from Contour strips. Lets dig deeper and look at some of the attributes that separate these 2 glucose test strips:

What Is Second Chance Sampling with Contour NEXT Glucose Test Strips?

Second Chance Sampling is a new feature that allows users to reapply blood to the same test strip if necessary during a glucose testing, in case the first sample was not sufficient. You may have encountered situations during a test when you lance your finger, but you do not get sufficient amount of blood. With Contour NEXT test strips, you don’t have to get a new strip and prick your finger again. Simply add more blood to the same test strip until the test is complete. This is a great feature for beginners or those who test blood glucose frequently, take insulin, would like a simple blood glucose testing experience, and expect more from their home blood glucose monitoring system. Just keep in mind that you must always discard a used glucose test strip. Also note that, this feature is available only in some Contour NEXT meters.

At the end, the difference between the 2 test strips boils down to glucose meter compatibility. Both Contour and Contour NEXT test strips are simple to use and deliver accurate results in as little as 5 second. What separates them from each other is extra features that their corresponding meters offer. Find out which meter works best for you then buy the corresponding test strips.

  2. Jose says:

I have both Contour and Contour Next. When using both at the same time, same sample, measures are way different: while Contour is 6.6, Contour Next is showing 9.1. Why is it?

    • Raj says:

I have purchased contour plus one for my mother. I tested the blood sugar level with this device when lab assistance taking the blood sample. There was around 20 mg/dL difference in resultant value. Contour plus one was showing more blood sugar value. Same day morning I tested two times, before and after food. I am impressed with this contour brand device.

    • DiabeticOutlet says:

That would be a question for the manufacturer technical support. You can try using control solutions to check the accuracy of each meter.

    • DiabeticOutlet says:

We don’t carry the Contour Plus. The obvious difference is in the test strips. Each one has their own specific strips. As for the features you can refer to each meter user manuals.

  3. Dr. Gavriel Feigin says:

You write: “Contour Next meters have more variety and features than Contour meters”. Can you please be specific, not so very vague?

    • DiabeticOutlet says:

The difference is in the meters and their features. Contour Next is the next generation of Contour, has a wider variety of meters therefore has more to offer.

    • DiabeticOutlet says:

Contour Next is more popular than regular Contour though both test strips are equally reliable as far as accuracy of readings is concerned. The difference is in their perspective meters. Contour Next meters have more variety and features than Contour meters.

      • Nanette P Perkins says:

Belinda was asking about contour next and contour ex differences, not contour and contour next. I’m interested, too.

          • Jose Hernan Garcia says:

Why are they giving me different results of blood test taken at the same time? Counture next is 1 point higher than the previous version. Are they trying to sell more medicine?

    • DiabeticOutlet says:

No they cannot. Bayer Contour test strips for use with Bayer Contour meter(s) only. Bayer Contour NEXT test strips are for use with Bayer Contour NEXT meter(s).

  4. zawahir says:

Contour XT & Contour Next both are same or 2 different products? if so what are the differences and which one is the latest of all?
    Appreciate your kind advise

Bayer Contour test strips for use with Bayer Contour meter(s) only. Bayer Contour NEXT test strips are for use with Bayer Contour NEXT meter(s). Both are made by the same manufacturer, Bayer, but have slightly different features with Contour NEXT being the next generation of the regular Contour strips. They both work equally well when it comes to home glucose monitoring.

    • DiabeticOutlet says:

Thank you for your comment. I am not familiar with Contour Plus, but I can tell you for sure the Contour Next meter uses the Contour Next test strips only. You can verify that by reading the footprints on the meter box or the user-manual.

    • Iulia says:

Oare ati reusit sa aflati daca sunt valabile testele Contour plus pe aparatul Contour next? Vin si eu dupa 2 ani de zile cu intrebarea asta :))

    • DiabeticOutlet says:

No, they won’t. Bayer Contour test strips are for use with Bayer CONTOUR meters only. They cannot be interchanged with Contour Next.
