DEXCOM G4 AND G5 DISCONTINUED

Dexcom G4 and G5 Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) Systems Discontinued!

Dexcom has recently announced on its website that “starting June 2020, Dexcom will discontinue the sale of transmitters for the Dexcom G4 PLATINUM and Dexcom G5 Mobile Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) Systems. We will not be able to guarantee the availability of Dexcom G4 PLATINUM or Dexcom G5 Mobile sensors beyond the end of this year”.

Here is an outlined timeline to note the changes Dexcom customers should be aware of. 

JUNE 2020: Dexcom will discontinue the sale of transmitters for the Dexcom G4 PLATINUM and Dexcom G5 Mobile Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) Systems.

JUNE 30th 2020: Dexcom will no longer support the Dexcom Share 2 app. Meaning, if you are sharing your data with your Dexcom G4 PLATINUM, they will no longer receive your data. 

Nov.-Dec. of 2020: Dexcom G4 Platinum and Dexcom G5 Mobile sensors will be phased out and no longer be available for purchase (latest offered by Dec. 31st). 

December 31st, 2020: Dexcom Studio will no longer be available for download. Dexcom is planning to discontinue support of that app and will redirect customers to using Dexcom Clarity. Dexcom Clarity is an app that analytically tracks your numbers, patterns, and allows you to set goals and receive notifications.

Why did Dexcom do it?

Dexcom states that their reasoning for discontinuing the Dexcom G4 PLATINUM and Dexcom G5 Mobile CGM system is to upgrade users. “We want our customers to experience the latest in CGM technology and invite you to learn about the Dexcom G6, our latest generation CGM system”. 

What is the Dexcom G6?

The Dexcom G6 CGM System is the latest generation of CGM available from Dexcom. It displays continuous, real-time monitoring of their blood glucose levels without the need to manually prick their finger or scan their sensor. 

I’m a Dexcom G4 PLATINUM user, now what?!

Dexcom is telling customers that their Reorder Sales Specialist (RSS)  or distributor will contact them to discuss upgrading to the Dexcom G6 the next time an order needs to be placed. Regardless, this change is happening fast and if you or someone you know has an insulin pump compatible with the G5 mobile CGM system, to contact their RSS immediately. 

The Dexcom G6 is a fantastic upgrade if you or a loved one is currently using the G4 PLATINUM or G5 CGM. The biggest differences between the G5 and G6 is the auto-inserter, addition of sensor codes, and the increased accuracy. If you would like to upgrade to the G6, please click here.
