WHAT DO DIABETES AND SOCIAL MEDIA HAVE TO DO WITH EACH OTHER?

Once upon a time, there was an motherless kitty. She embarked upon a search to find her mother, and in doing so, braved the dangerous streets of Anaheim, California. She traveled far and wide, and on her tiresome and dangerous mission she battled strangers, crazy drivers, neighborhood dogs, and wild coyotes. Unfortunately, her search was fruitless. Saddened, she returned to Anaheim. Fortunately, when she returned, a nice family took her in and gave her the loving name “Mishu.”

Unfortunately, Mishu’s courageous mission occurred before the advent of social media. Can you image how different her journey might have been with the help of social media?

Do you see where I’m going with this? Social media and its interconnected forces allow us to reach beyond what’s traditionally considered possible. The power of social media is strong, especially when it’s working toward a specific goal. One goal might be to connect with others who share the same cause. In our case, diabetes and topics of its ilk.

For instance, thanks to Facebook I recently connected with four of my kitten cousins. Now I’m up to speed on what they do, places they go, and things they like. Facebook connects us even though we are physically apart. Pretty amazing, right?

Social Media and Diabetes Management

Being diagnosed with diabetes is a tough pill to swallow. There are lots of difficult lifestyle changes that must occur; so I am sure you would agree that one thing we cannot get enough of is support. Social media is a great stomping ground for diabetics to interact and support one another.

Reach out

I encourage you to seek support for better diabetes management in social media. Believe me, it can be as effective as recommendations and support from friends and family. Listen to others’ stories and reach out for help. You will be surprised with the kind of support you might get.

Pick up A Role

You can also be a contributor. Help someone who might be going through the same diabetic difficulties you had to go through by sharing your experiences and wisdom.

Just remember, as a diabetic, you should never feel alone. There are many people who have endured and are enduring the same struggles and successes as you. Reach out and communicate with each other through social media.
