Why Flash Continuous Glucose Monitoring?
The Freestyle Libre 3 system is one of the only glucose monitoring devices to measure glucose levels every minute. Use a Traditional Glucose Monitor and Test Strips When Needed
The Freestyle Libre 3 Reader can provide glucose readings from the Freestyle Libre 3 Wearable Sensor or Precision Neo Test strips. That means you can always us a traditional test strip method to check your blood glucose levels.
The primary function of the reader is to provide 24/7 real-time readings, tracking and alarms when setup with the wearable sensor. The reader does also work as a traditional blood glucose monitor (replying upon the finger pricking method) as needed.
When to Use Traditional Test Strips
Freestyle advises using a blood glucose meter in the following situations:
- If you are experiencing symptoms that are not consistent with your glucose readings
- During the first 12 hours of wearing the sensor you may find the Freestyle Libre 3 Inaccurate
- If the reading does not include a number
- As a backup to the Libre 3 sensor
What test strips does the Freestyle Libre 3 Reader Use?
The Libre 3 Reader works only with Freestyle Precision Neo Test Strips.
Libre 3 Reader or Smartphone?
The Libre 3 Sensor will display readings, tracking, and alarms through either the Libre 3 iPhone App or the Libre 3 reader.
The Freestyle Libre 3 manual states, “Before you start your Sensor, choose which device you want to use. If you start the Sensor with the App, you will be unable to use the Reader to check your glucose or receive alarms”.
Upon pairing a new Libre 3 sensor with either device be sure that the selected device will be accessible through the duration of the sensor life (14 days). As of the Libre 2 release, each sensor can only pair with one device (reader or smartphone).
Why Would I Need The Libre 3 Reader?
The Freestyle Libre 3 reader can both pair with the wearable sensor and work as a standalone blood glucose monitor. That means having the Libre 3 reader enables you to obtain continuous glucose readings as well traditional testing using a strip.
Having the reader allows for an all-in-one solution to get easy-swipe readings from the sensor, real time graphs from the previously readings, and optional alarms for high glucose, low glucose, and signal loss. Additionally, with the use of Freestyle Precision Neo Test Strips the reader provides a backup testing method as required.

I had been using the app on my phone, I was getting signal loss a lot. I switched to the reader and it works good. What I like about the reader is the instant readings I get at a press of a button.

The reader is basic and provides your glucose at the touch of a button. You can program alarms and input when you take your medication or have food. It has a limited range of about 10ft before it loses its ability to track your sensor so you have to have it with you always. I opted for the reader because the app was not working correctly on m android. You can't use the app and reader on the same sensor either for those wondering. Insurance may cover the cost of the reader also but I had to pay out of pocket and then open a claim.

Q & A
FreeStyle Libre 3 Reader
Yes!
Diabetic Outlet answered on September 24, 2025 store managerIt's hard to answer this question because the distance can vary depending on the circumstances. Based on the information online, under optimal conditions, approximately 328 feet. However, in practical scenarios, especially in indoor environments with walls, furniture, and other obstacles, the effective range is typically reduced.
Users have reported varying experiences with the Libre 3's Bluetooth connectivity. Some have noted that the sensor maintains a stable connection within a range of about 33 feet, while others have experienced connectivity issues even at shorter distances, such as 10 feet. For the most accurate information please contact Libre Support.

Pros- Product instructions was easy to setup. My unit connected to the reader on first try. Cons- none at this time
It works better than my Libre 2. Love the fact that the reader automatically alerts me up to 30 feet away.
Getting used to it. But not 100% accurate, but close.
The freestyle Libre app was now longer compatible with my iphone software (after I updated to the latest one). It alerted me every 3 mins to replace my sensor despite just putting a new one on several times. I had to turn my notifications on and off every time, just so I can see my readings. That means, I became hypoglycemic several times without knowing. This was a lifesaver.
The reader is particularly easy to use and fairly intuitive. Alarms when you are out of range even in the middle of the night, so evasive action can be taken.
